About Josie Courreges

Blessed with remarkable range, beautiful tone quality, impeccable intonation, and broad versatility, vocalist Josie Courreges has recorded a collection of great songs, guaranteed to rouse a span of emotions from melancholy to mirth. Courreges, who has had a fruitful and varied career singing melodies encompassing light opera to jazz, has put together a cluster of her best loved songs sung in her favorite style.

In recording this project, Josie has drawn from her extensive professional vocal experience which began as a teenager singing with the prestigious Horace Heidt band, then a stint with the Los Angeles Philharmonic production of Brigadoon, and eventually on to television appearances with the Lawrence Welk orchestra. While working in the Welk organization, Josie met popular honky-tonk piano player Big Tiny Little, who upon leaving the show to tour on his own, invited her to join him as featured vocalist. She accepted, and for the next six years, a successful association developed, which included extensive touring across the country and recording featuring Josie as vocalist on Coral Records.

In the 1960s she was spotted by the well-known singing trio The DeCastro Sisters, who had the hit song "Teach Me Tonight" - included on this CD. With one of the sisters retiring, Josie was made an offer she couldn't refuse, and for the next four and a half years, she toured all of North America as an integral part of this popular singing group, with frequent appearances at the Stardust Hotel in Las Vegas, and other prestigious venues from New York to Los Angeles.

Sensing the need to spend more time with her family, she left the road with the DeCastro Sisters to stay near her home and work in the Southern California area. Once she decided to sing locally, Josie connected with gifted guitarist Hayden Causey, who himself toured many years with the great Vic Damone. Josie and Hayden joined forces with pianist Charlie Murchison to form the locally popular Hayden Causey Trio, with whom she also recorded. The title song of this CD "Since You" was written by the Causey-Murchison songwriting team, and remains one of Josie's all-time favorite ballads.

In recording this new project, Josie Courreges has teamed with pianist/arranger Joe Massimino, who won a TV Emmy for his work as the musical director of the "Mike Douglas Show." (Ironically, Joe was the pianist for the DeCastro Sisters before Josie joined the group.) Marc LeBrun, currently with Maureen McGovern, also plays pian on four selections: "Teach Me Tonight," "The Very Thought of You," "How Long Has This Been Going On," and "I'm Beginning to See The Light." Jack Reidling rounds out the list of guest piano players, accompanying Josie on the title song "Since You," "Tangerine," "Our Love Is Here to Stay," and Latin-favorite from Josie's live show "Sabor A Mi." The exceptional arranging of Joe Massimino on "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," "Secret Love," "Mas Que Nada," "More Than You Know" and the haunting "On My Way To You" are most notable.

Other players who shine with their well-honed talents included: Bass player Luther Hughes, known for his work with Carmen McRae, Jack Jones, David Benoit and Gene Harris; Flugelhorn player Carmen Fanzone, who adds a tasteful lyrical touch to the CD; and finally drummers Ted Hawke and John Perett, two accomplished veterans.

If you love songs with the great standard feel, sung the way they were meant to be sung, Josie Courreges is a sure winner! Enjoy!
